HINDSFORD could be just one win away from securing a third successive Premier Division championship after beating title rivals Prestwich Heys on Saturday.

Chris Hopwood scored a goal in each half – the first a penalty – in the 2-0 home win that put the Squires Lane side level on points with leaders Royton Town, who completed their programme with a 4-2 win at AVRO.

Lee Bennett’s side could still be caught by third-placed Heys and sixth-placed Stockport Georgians who have two and three games in hand, respectively, but if results go their way tomorrow night, victory over the Georgians at Squires Lane on Saturday would see them crowned champions again.

“We said it would go down to the wire and that’s the way it’s going,” said Bennett, who praised his side’s impressive team performance.

“We came out of the blocks quickly and I was very proud of them. They stood up to the challenge and were good value for the win.

“Matty Ince made a good save to keep it at 2-0 but we threw the kitchen sink at them, hitting the bar and the post.

“The whole defence played extremely well but collectively it was a good performance.

“The title could be decided this weekend but it could still go to May 10 when Prestwich and the Georgians play their final games.

“Whatever happens anywhere else, though, we’ve got to make sure we win on Saturday.”

Heys host fourth-placed Monton tomorrow while the Georgians travel to AVRO, then it’s Georgians v Heys next Tuesday.

Atherton Town’s promotion from Division One was confirmed at the wekeend, without them kicking a ball.

They are now level on points with leaders Chapel Town, who could secure the title if they win at Beechfield on Saturday, otherwise Town – who meet Elton Vale in the final of the Murray Trophy at Hyde United on Friday night – could be crowned champions if they beat irlan Steel at Howe Bridge in their final league game on May 10.

Leigh Athletic go into their final league game at Wilmslow Albion tonight brimming with confidence after racking up a third successive away win on Saturday.

The Leigh Sports Village side followed up wins at Chadderton Town Reserves (6-1) and Heywood St James (6-3) with a 3-1 win at Uppermill.

A goal down at half time, they came back strongly after the break with Jack Kenny scoring twice either side of a Joe Kirzlowski strike, continuing the run of form that has taken them from third bottom of the table at Christmas to seventh with a chance of finishing fifth, if results go their way.
