A LOCAL football club official will curb shouting at referees in order to raise money for a five-year-old disabled boy.

Howe Bridge Mills secretary Vinny Monks will stage a one-man sponsored silence during his side's Lancashire Cup game against Alexandra Hotel FC next Saturday.

Monks is well known by referees for giving them his advice and opinions on their decision during games.

But in a bid to boost funds to help send young Charlie Townsend on a dream holiday to Disneyland Paris, he is determined to keep his views to himself for one game only.

Whether he will be able to do it or not is another matter, according to Howe Bridge Mills manager Paul White.

"Vinny is well known for having a big mouth during matches," said White, who is Charlie's uncle.

"Referees hate him. But his heart is in the right place.

"It's really good of him to try to do this for Charlie, but I don't think he's going to be able to manage it, to be honest."

Monk is the former joint manager of the first team who play in the Premier Division of the Lancashire Amateur League and a stalwart of the club.

He will be looking to add to Charlie's fund which currently stands at around £700.

Charlie, from Atherton, was born with West Syndrome, a severe form of epilepsy, and has cerebral palsy, severe dystonia and is blind.
