Seventh heaven for in-form Breightmet

THINGS are looking up for Breightmet United as they continue to pull clear of the Division One basement.
Boosted by recent form and results, Simon Wilcox’s team hammered top-six side Stockport Sports Reserves 7-1 at Moss Park on Saturday – and the margin could have been wider.
“It was a bit of a revenge mission for us because they beat us last time and didn’t deserve it, so we had a bit of extra fire in our bellies,”
Wilcox said.
“And no one could have argued if it had been 10, or even more. It was a real joy to watch.
“We had been struggling to get a settled squad but over the last two or three games we’ve settled down and it’s shown. And the pleasing thing is that everybody is working their socks off. The attitude is great.”
Leading 1-0 at half time through a Gary McShane goal, Breightmet cut loose in the second half with goals from Anthony Green (two), Tommy Williams, Tom Booth and Danny Kerr before conceding a late penalty that gave Stockport their consolation goal.
Atherton Town came off the back of a five-week lay-off to step up their promotion push with a 5-0 victory over Hollinwood.
Shaun Lynch played his first-teamers in the club’s A team fixture the previous weekend and the move paid off as the Howe Bridge-based side went 2-0 up with firsthalf goals from Ryan Heapey and Dane Grimes.
Nick Eastham scored a superb third with a clever chip after a multipass move and added a second shortly after before debutant Leighton Mills wrapped it up.
Town are now third with five games in hand on second-placed Dukinfield Town who remain six points ahead of them after a 2-1 win at Pennington, who paid for a lack of experience as they were outmuscled by their stronger visitors.
Lee Smith fired them ahead early in the second half. It was a lead they could not hold, however, as Dukinfield hit back soon after and maintained the pressure which brought the winner 15 minutes from time.
Struggling Fives Athletic produced their best performance of the season at Chapel Town and looked to be heading for a well-earned point until conceding the only goal two minutes from time.
Premier Division leaders Hindsford had only themselves to blame after being held to a 3-3 draw at Springhead.
Trailing to an own goal, they recovered well to take a 3-1 lead with goals from Wes Bancroft, Josh Waldeis and Tommy Valentine.
Waldeis missed a penalty that would have made it 4-1 but defensive mistakes gifted the home side two goals in the last 10 minutes.
At the other end of the table, Leigh Athletic came from behind to romp to a 7-3 win at fellow- strugglers Heywood St James.
Andy Miller scored four and goals from David Dooley, James Dooley and Chris Hopwood earned the Latics a win that took them up to third bottom of the table, swapping places with the Saints.
