ATHERTON Collieries surrendered their 10 match unbeaten run as they lost 2-0 away at Formby in the first round of the First Division Trophy.

Despite enjoying a fair share of possession and chances Colls were unable to score against a well disciplined and highly organised Formby side.

In testing conditions, neither side could settle into the match as a tedious affair unfolded.

With nothing to separate the two sides in the first half, Formby broke the deadlock on 49 minutes with a Mikey White penalty.

Colls responded and went in search of an equaliser but couldn’t get an effort on target.

They were duly punished and found themselves further behind on 82 minutes when John Prescott broke free to finish superbly past Joe Brobbin.

Daisy Hill were also in First Division Trophy action as they came up against Nelson at New Sirs.

Now without a win in eight matches, Daisy found themselves behind on 26 minutes after Brandon Barski finished a Ben Hoskin cross. Hoskin then grabbed himself a goal on 32 minutes with a superb solo run before smashing into the net to extend Nelson’s lead.

The match was put beyond doubt on 65 minutes when Robert Grimes dribbled past three defenders before sliding the ball past the goalkeeper.

The result leaves Craig Thomas’ men in 13th place having played five more matches than other teams around them.

Elsewhere, Atherton Laburnum Rovers recorded an impressive 4-1 victory at home to Cheadle Town in the league – a result which sees them rise up to fifth.

The last match between the two teams ended in a 1-1 draw after LR squandered a number of chances.

There was no repeat of that on this occasion as the home side took the lead on 28 minutes through Matty Boland.

Within two minutes their lead was doubled when Jordan Cover lobbed the goalkeeper after latching on to a great through ball. Boland added another on 41 minutes when he too lobbed the keeper after beating the Cheadle backline.

The visitors pulled a goal back on 56 minutes through Bradley Brokenbow before Cover registered his second goal late on to secure the three points.

Speaking after the match, LR boss Michael Clegg praised his two young strikers.

He said: “I was really pleased with our performance again today. Boland and Cover caused Cheadle a lot of problems up front.

“ I’ve brought in a number of young local lads recently and the team is beginning to gel successfully.”
