ATHERTON LR host neighbours Daisy Hill tonight with manager Ross McNair hoping to see his side force their way into the play-off mix.

The Crilly Park outfit go into the derby in eighth place in the North West Counties League First Division, two points outside the top six.

Victory over their neighbours, who are fifth, four points better off, would see LR break into the play-off places.

But after already losing three out of three encounters against their neighbours in league and cup so far this season, McNair knows his side will have to be on top form to claim all three points.

“It’s a massive game for us – win it and we’re in the mix for the play-offs,” said McNair, who used to play for Daisy Hill alongside now manager Craig Thomas.

“That’s easier said than done as Hill are fierce competitors. They deserved those three wins against us and Thommo has done an amazing job this season.”

Jamie Forbes is expected to return from injury for LR, who have signed Matty Davies on a permanent deal and also brought in striker Danny Smith from Burscough.

Thomas, meanwhile, is looking to get back to winning ways after losing 5-0 at high-flying Cammell Laird last time out, their third defeat in the four matches they have played since the turn of the year.

“We pride ourselves on our effort and will to win and that hinges upon fitness," he said. "We lost a bit of that through Christmas and January’s weekends off but we are looking sharper and leaner now."

Division One leaders Atherton Collieries are in Men United Cup action tomorrow, travelling to Premier Division Colne.

Manager Michael Clegg is in buoyant mood and justifiably so. Colls have a 100 percent record against Premier Division sides this season.

“We’ve played five Premier teams this year and got five wins," he said. "I think with our form we could be considered favourites against Colne."

Clegg also shrugged off suggestions Colls' outstanding form could lead to complacency.

“The lads are training better than ever," he added. "With five pieces of silverware to go for, they are hungry. We won’t let up.”
