EAGLEY secured a sixth Hospital Cup with a dramatic last-minute winner against Pennington at the Macron.

Substitute Oli Clarke snatched the winner just moments after their Manchester League opponents had clawed their way on to level terms.

It was a massive relief for Simon Whaley’s side, who held a commanding 2-0 advantage at half time and looked good for straightforward victory.

West Lancs Eagley took less than five minutes to force their way ahead, Danny Holroyd powering a header past Luis Murray from Whaley's right-wing corner.

Pennington's response was impressive, and Adam Caunce's goal came under pressure, with Matt Chadwick going closest, heading Niall Battersby's cross just wide.

The second goal stopped the Wiganers in their tracks, however, as Jack Cowen was chopped down by Ross Farrington and player-boss Whaley drilled home the spot kick with authority.

Pennington refused to lie down and accept their fate. A few minutes into the second half Matthew Chadwick was brought down on the edge of the box and captain Chris Lowe curled a fine free-kick into the bottom corner to get his side back into the game.

With just a few minutes remaining the underdogs finally got back on level terms, Heath Ainscow seizing on the loose ball after a deflected shot.

But their joy was short-lived, and Clarke bundled the winner home from close range to secure the trophy for the fourth time in nine years.
