Middle man Soares hoping to hit goal trail

TOM Soares has vowed to add more goals to his game after celebrating signing a three-month contract at Bury with a fine strike at Brentford.
The former Crystal Palace midfielder sprinted half the length of the pitch to get on to a long ball from Carl Regan before burying a half volley into the top corner.
It was his first goal in 12 matches for the Shakers and only the 17th of a nine-year career, but the 26-year-old midfielder is hungry for more.
“He (manager Kevin Blackwell) actually said to me if I knew you were going to score I’d have paid you a lot sooner,” said Soares, who was effectively playing for free before signing his contract last Friday.
“It’s something I need to add to my game a bit more and I’ve been working on it quite a bit.
“Hopefully I will get a few more from now until the end of the season.”
As well as scoring Bury’s opener in the 2-2 draw at Griffin Park, Soares also set up Nicky Ajose for the second.
It was his best performance since arriving at Gigg Lane for a trial in November after being released by Stoke in the summer.
The Reading-born midfielder is eager to show Bury fans just why Tony Pulis was tempted to part with £1.25million for his services back in 2008.
“It’s a bit of a relief (signing a contract), but I can’t relax, there’s still a big job to do,” said Soares.
“I think there is still more to come, but every week that’s passing I’m feeling stronger.”
While the youngster believes he still has a job to do to win over the Bury fans, his manager needs no convincing.
“The kid came up and he paid all his own way and he’s starting to show what we know he can do,” said Blackwell.
“It took him two months solid training to catch up with the rest of the players.
“But he’s got ability, there’s no doubt about that.”
