The Bury exodus begins

First published in Bury FC by

BURY manager David Flitcroft may have acted quickly to bring in new faces in the first week of the transfer window, but there could be many more leaving the club than arriving by the end of January.

It was announced this week that Trevor Carson will stay at Portsmouth until the end of the season after Bury agreed to extend the goalkeeper’s loan deal.

The 25-year-old stopper was loaned out in October as the Shakers’ board bid to get the high wage-earner off their books.

That news followed the decision not to renew the loan deals of Fleetwood Town defenders Shaun Beeley and Dean Howell, and Sunderland centre-back Scott Harrison, while 18-year-old striker Tom Pratt has agreed to have his contract terminated.

And that may just be the start of the exodus.

“We are going to be looking at getting players out, there is no doubt about that,” said Flitcroft.

“We are working on that continuously and are making strides.”

While the Bury boss has earmarked the players he wants to keep, as well as bring in, he admits the board has been left to concentrate on shipping the remaining players out.

Instead, he will be putting all of his energy in preparing the Bury squad for Saturday's trip to League Two promotion hopefuls Chesterfield.

“Concentrating on the football, and planning for Chesterfield is my sole focus,” he said.

“Behind the scenes, the board is working intensely to balance the squad and make sure that’s even.

“You can’t have 30 players at any football club, but certainly not at a football club that doesn’t have its own training ground.

“In view of the financial fair play regulations, your squad size will have to come down and the squad size has been big here.”

While a number of players will be on their way out, Flitcroft is more than happy with the players he has been able to bring in, with experienced defender Pablo Mills and top marksman Daniel Nardiello amongst five signings.

“We have got enough energy in the team now and enough speed in and around the squad,” he said.

“It’s about balancing that consistent performer of the right age with the youthfulness and dynamic capabilities of someone like a Danny Mayor, a Craig Jones or an Anton Forrester.

“It’s about trying to find that balance.”

What does that mean? We are a club that doesn't have its own training ground?

More clarity from Flits. Yes, a clear out from the Ghost of KB is required. Would like to see Rooney stick around, has shown some skills that may be useful.
However, my trust is in the Gaffer and what ever he decides to do will be for the best of the club and fans.

Give youth a chance, don't think so otherwise Pratt wouldn't have been shown the door.

I think the only thing that makes any sense contained within this article is that this penny pinching board want to make severe cuts saving them money (no) because they will have to pay off the contracts of the players they signed in the first place.

You can't just tell a player "on your way son we don't need you anymore" without paying him off or continue to pay his wages.

The practices of this board financially have been total madness these past few months.

If they bothered to vet each player as KEVIN BLACKWELL promised in his infamous speech attending the BURY FC forum then we wouldn't have so many players with contracts to sever.

I have never known a situation like it in all of the years i have been following this club.

You simply bring in the right players who come for the right reasons then you don't have to worry about getting rid of them 6 months in to their contracts.

Our only hope is that Flits does get it right and we can all look forward to a happy prosperous future for the club and i do believe we are on the right track.

Eileen,
Sorry but it is very difficult to understand what point you are trying to put over....Are you in favour or against your Club's Board? Surely, this board you talk about has just rescued our club, Bury FC from possible extinction and you go on about practices of the board being total madness... The only madness I see are in these comment pages..... O, and by the way, we have just agreed with Rooney to rip up his contract and both parties can walk away. To be honest, I think Blackwell brought in a lot of players we should be saying goodbye to. It makes no sense to have 28 players for the first team squad at this level. I would say 20 max of good pro's and then concentrate on getting some young lads thru the system like we did in the 1970's, under Bobbie Smith's direction.

ps. I love your articles Eileen. They give me a real headache most times but keep em coming!
