DAVID Flitcroft finally got his man yesterday after ending a six-week search for a left-sided defender with the signing of Hudddersfield Town full-back Jake Carroll.

The 22-year-old Irishman has played four Championship games for the Terriers and competed in the Europa League with League of Ireland club St Patrick’s Athletics.

His arrival on an initial 28-day loan marks the end of a “patient” pursuit by Shakers boss David Flitcroft to recruit a specialist left-sided wing-back.

“We bided our time but I am really pleased to have finally got Jake,” said Flitcroft.

“He is athletic, is a good size and has got good pace.

“Jake is someone I have been tracking since before I came to Bury and as soon as I got the job he is one of the first players I went for.

"But it has had to be a patient process because I know he had a lot of interest from League One clubs.”

The Bury boss says chairman Stewart Day’s links with the West Yorkshire club were key to securing the deal.

“I know that the two chairmen have a very good relationship and so they know they can trust us with their players,” he said.

“Mark Robins, the Terriers manager, also appreciates the type of football we play here and is happy that Jake will develop in the right way.

“The fact we have a busy fixture schedule also played a part.

“We have seven games to play during the length of Jake’s loan spell, so he has the opportunity to get right up to speed and go back with a lot of first-team football under his belt.”

Carroll will go straight into the squad for Saturday’s trip to AFC Wimbledon.
