A DANNY Nardiello double and late Ryan Lowe strike proved just about enough to set Bury’s Wembley bandwagon rolling as they edged past League Two rivals Morecambe and into the third round of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

Nardiello sent the Shakers into the break two up with his fifth and sixth goals of the season, opening the scoring from the penalty spot in the 14th-minute before tapping in the second on the stoke of half time.

The home side took their foot off the gas in the second period and were left hanging on after former Bury loanee Shaun Beeley pulled one back and Ryan Williams hit the woodwork late on.

But Lowe’s 90th-minute strike settled the nerves and put Bury into the hat for Saturday’s draw.

David Flitcroft’s league leaders started strongly with Nicky Adams and Nardiello both getting in behind the Morecambe defence in the opening stages.

And they were soon a goal to the good after right-back Beeley handled in the box and Nardiello coolly converted the spot kick.

Morecambe slowly played themselves into the game after that and had the ball in the back of the net on 26 minutes but Padraig Amond’s lob was rightly ruled out for offside.

But Bury stepped up a gear as half time approached and Adams showed his class on 40 minutes to dance past Morecambe centre-back Ryan Edwards and find Nardiello with a square ball that he tapped in unopposed from a few yards out.

Neither side managed a shot on target in the opening 15 minutes of the second half as the match threatened to fizzle out as a contest.

Williams did his best to give the 1,600-strong crowd something to cheer about with a blistering 30-yard free kick that Bury stopper Shwan Jalal fumbled but gathered at the second attempt.

And the drums of the noisy visiting supporters picked up a beat when Beeley plundered a goal from nothing in the 74th-minute, curling a shot across goal and into the bottom corner with his unfavoured left foot.

Williams again stepped up minutes later to crash another long range free-kick against the post with Jalal beaten.

But Lowe capitalised on a slip for Morecambe stopper Barry Roche, who was forced to drop the ball at his feet as he slid out of his box and the substitute stroked it home from a tight angle.
