SCOTT Loach has promised not to use and abuse his position as Bury’s new first-choice goalkeeper after signing on loan from Rotherham this week.

The 26-year-old former Watford and Ipswich stopper went straight into the starting line-up for Tuesday night’s defeat at home to Tranmere and is expected to keep his place for tomorrow’s trip to Morecambe.

His arrival, until January 17, has seen Rob Lainton demoted to number two while Bury boss David Flitcroft confirmed he was hoping to move summer signing Shwan Jalal out of the club.

But despite only signing on a short-term deal, Loach is adamant he will repay the faith shown by his new manager.

“The gaffer’s put his trust in me,” said Loach. “That doesn’t mean I am going to sit back, I have got to work hard. I obviously know about Shwan and Rob so nothing is guaranteed in football and it could all change overnight.

“But while I have come here to prove a point to Rotherham to say ‘I am good enough for you’, I have not just come to Bury for six weeks to use the club and go.

“I want to be here, I want to be part of something, I want to get games in and, starting Saturday, I want to move up the league.”

Bury have picked up just one point from their last four matches away from home, but remain in fourth place in League Two, just two points behind leaders Wycombe.

After showing fragility in defence on the road, Flitcroft has clearly identified the goalkeeping position as a problem area, starting both Lainton and Jalal in recent weeks before finally deciding to get outside help.

The Shakers manager revealed that Loach had actually been his number one target over the summer, but could not compete with the lure of Championship football at Rotherham.

“He’s got real quality," said Flitcroft, of the 6ft 4ins stopper. "He sees passes over the centre-halves and he will give us a real presence. He is quick over the ground and he’s a keeper that we have had an eye on for quite some time.

“Rotherham beat us to the punch in the summer when we had been tracking him.

“He has got great pedigree. What he did at Watford and Ipswich was fantastic but he’s not been able to rediscover that form at Rotherham.

“When a keeper comes up like Scott you would be daft not to want his services.”

While his words might be designed to boost the flagging confidence of Loach, who has managed just four appearances for the Millers this campaign, they will be like daggers to the heart of Jalal, who has fallen down the pecking order since moving from Bournemouth in the summer.

But he did not stop there.

“With Scott coming in it’s an opportunity maybe to be looking to get Shwan out,” Flitcroft added.

“He’s come and it’s just not worked out.

“It’s a difficult move sometimes. You move all of your family up and things can get a little difficult when you are not number one.

“He’s not been able to force himself in as a number one but he has been great around the place. He has supported Rob, but three is probably a crowd.”

While Loach is destined to start, Hayden White - another new arrival – is suspended for the trip to Morecambe.

Ryan Lowe and Craig Jones will also miss the match through injury.
