NINE workers at the UIE shipyard in Clydebank were injured yesterday

when a steel stairway collapsed on to scaffolding, knocking it to the

ground. The men, who were working on the staircase and scaffolding on

the east side of a gas and oil platform being built for Total, fell

between 15ft and 20ft.

They were taken to the Western Infirmary, Glasgow. A 63-year-old man

was detained with a fractured leg. The others, aged between 27 and 56,

were allowed home after treatment. A UIE spokesman said it was not yet

known what had caused the accident. It was being investigated by the

Health and Safety Executive.
