TWO million children or almost one in five are being raised in

households where there is no adult in paid employment, acccording to a

study by the General Municipal and Boilermakers' union.

In parts of London, Liverpool and Manchester the figure is as high as

one in two, while in Glasgow the situation is not much better with 38%

of children in households with no earned income. Elsewhere in Scotland,

Clydebank registers 32%, Monklands 27% and Dundee 25%.

For Scotland as a whole, the total is given as 1,082,965, or 19%.

GMB general secretary John Edmonds said the only s answer was the

provision of jobs with a living wage.
