CAPTAIN fantastic Nathan Cameron is determined to finish the job he has started after leading Bury to League One in his first season as skipper.

The 23-year-old former Coventry defender is convinced the Shakers have a squad capable of achieving back-to-back promotions following Saturday’s dramatic final-day victory at Tranmere.

And after signing a two-year extension to his contract midway through this season, Cameron says he has no plans to cash in on any lucrative offers to play at an even higher level.

“I haven’t heard about any concrete offers and to be honest I haven’t had any thoughts about moving on,” he said.

“I obviously signed for another two years earlier in the season and I couldn’t have been happier with the way things have gone.

“I think the club is set up to kick on again next season.

“The players already in the squad are more than capable of doing well in League One, I don’t think there will be too many changes to the team.

“I don’t think you can rule out another promotion push, I’m pretty sure that’s what the gaffer and the chairman want.”

Bury manager David Flitcroft has been Cameron’s biggest supporter this season after the centre-back thrust his way back into the first-team picture following a spell on the sidelines at the end of the last campaign.

He moved the big defender into the starting line-up for the second game of the campaign and has started with him in every game since then.

Cameron’s dominant displays earned him the armband in November and Bury’s turn-around in form since Christmas under his leadership helped them to 13 wins in their final 16 matches to clinch automatic promotion on the final day.

And while winger Danny Mayor scooped the League Two player of the season award, Flitcroft believes his captain deserves similar recognition.

“Nathan Cam has gone under the radar,” he said.

“This boy is a champion. At the start of the season I told the lads you have got to go the extra 10 per cent. Champions go the extra 10 per cent and Nathan Cameron has done that.”

While Cameron has committed his future to Bury, veteran midfielder Chris Sedgwick announced his retirement following Saturday’s perfect end to the season.

But the 36-year-old is confident he leaves the club with a platform for future success.

“I was at Rotherham when we went back to back – we got promoted from this league and went straight up again and there is no reason why Bury cannot do that,” he said.
