DAVID Flitcroft believes there is "more to come" from midfielder John O'Sullivan after he extended his loan deal at Bury until the end of the season.

The on-loan Blackburn Rovers youngster was due to return to Ewood Park on Monday but he will now play out the rest of this term in a Shakers shirt.

Due to Bury's impressive run in the FA Cup and the 22-year-old being cup tied, O'Sullivan has been limited to just two substitute appearances and one start thus far.

But Flitcroft believes now the attacking-minded player has recovered from after a tough loan spell with neighbours Rochdale and is ready to show the Bury supporters what he is really made of.

“He struggled over at Rochdale but he has been able to really reset and find himself here,” Flitcroft said.

“He enjoys what we do and I do think there is more to come. I have enjoyed working with him.”

The extension of O'Sullivan's loan was the only business concluded by Bury during a quiet transfer deadline day.

However, more importantly, the Shakers were able to keep hold of key stars such as Leon Clarke and Joe Riley amidst rumours of interest from other clubs.

The retention of such talents now leaves the manager happy with his current squad, and he reiterated any problems that may occur can always be rectified when the loan window re-opens on Monday.

“There are no deals on the cards at the minute, we are still just working behind the scenes, but again if nothing comes about I’ve got a fantastic squad of players, so if I don't add to it then no problem," he said after Saturday's defeat to Hull City in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

“I won't bring anybody in that doesn't fit what we are trying to do and if we can't bring anyone in for whatever reason then it might be that we look at the loan situation.”

Bury's January transfer activity also saw goalkeeper Ian Lawlor arrive from Manchester City, while Hallam Hope extended his stay with Carlisle United until the end of the season, forward Anthony Dudley rejoined National League side Guiseley on loan, youth team graduate Brayden Shaw was released and later signed for Accrington Stanley, and Danny Nardiello was loaned to Plymouth Argyle until the end of the season.

But, perhaps most surprisingly, the Shakers kept hold of fans' favourite Ryan Lowe, who has impressed since his return from a loan spell with Crewe Alexandra.

Crewe manager Steve Davis admitted he was keen to extend the 37-year-old's stay at Gresty Road, but has now reluctantly withdrawn his interest in the front man's service.

“It went all cold over Lowey and that was more from Bury's side than ours because we were very keen on getting him back here,” he said.

“He is a Bury player and they are keen to keep him until the end of the season.”
