BURY moved quickly to plug the gap left by Chris Kirkland's sudden departure, signing former Bolton Wanderers goalkeeper Paul Rachubka on a one-year deal in time for Saturday's season opener.

The 35-year-old stopper, who made eight appearances for Wanderers last season but left in the summer following the end of his 12-month deal, was on the bench for Bury's 2-0 win against Charlton.

Manager David Flitcroft had faced the prospect of going into the season with only 18-year-old keeper Jack Ruddy in reserve after agreeing to cancel Kirkland's contract on Friday after the ex-England international said he wanted time away from the game.

"Bringing Chubs in was essential," said the Shakers boss. "It was really important that we did that business and got it over the line."

Rachubka started as a trainee at Manchester United and has had nine permanent clubs in his career, with others including Charlton, Huddersfield, Blackpool, Leeds, Oldham and Crewe.

In total, including loan deals, he has played for 18 different clubs, making 364 appearances.
