I THINK Mike Bassett: England Manager put it best in that brilliant film.

It wouldn't be right to quote him directly in these pages but I think Bury should stick to 4-4-2.

Just look at the impact a switch in formation had on Saturday.

The Shakers went into the break 3-0 down and left Walsall with a point.

In my experience, I very rarely took anything in that the manager said at half time, so I am not sure David Flitcroft's speech about Conor McGregor will have had quite the same impact as the changes he made to the team and personnel.

You are so used to the shouting and screaming that goes on that you tend to zone these things out.

I am sure that most players in the dressing room will have been the same.

They will have wanted to restore some pride, which will have been hurt by that first-half display.

And they will have feared the consequences should they have gone on to concede six or seven goals.

Putting on a player like Tom Pope will change a game.

In times of trouble, you look to your senior professionals to gee up their team-mates.

But Popey is the sort of striker that needs someone to bounce off. Put him next to a class act like James Vaughan and you see what happens.

So I will say it again, if you want to win games in League One, stick with 4-4-2 and you won't go far wrong.

You will always score more goals with two strikers, rather than one, and it is a formation that players at this level understand.

Don't go over-complicating things, you might get lucky in a one-off, but the less tinkering with formations the better.

The key is to be brave, stick with the players that turned it around at Walsall and let them prove it was no fluke.

Bury have two home league games coming up, against Port Vale this weekend and Shrewsbury the next.

Both will have a little bit extra spice because Pope - if he is selected – will be coming up against his old club, while e-Shaker Joe Riley will be returning with the Shrews.

So I expect there to be a good atmosphere at both games, the key for Bury is to use that and build on the confidence the fightback at the Bescot Stadium will have given them.
