TWO-goal hero Danny Mayor admitted Saturday's win against Shrewsbury was even sweeter after what happened at half time.

Shrews captain Adam El-Abd and James Vaughan clashed in a heated first half, which saw both get booked, and moments later Vaughan was shown a second yellow for a challenge on the ex-Bury loanee.

As the sides went off at the break, players and staff spilled back out of the tunnel after clashing inside it. The visitors were booed by the Bury fans as they emerged for the second half, with El-Abd getting most of the flak.

And he too was shown a second yellow shortly after for blocking Mayor.

The Shakers winger made him pay by firing in a superb opener and although Shrewsbury equalised, Mayor pounced again late on for his third goal of the season.

He said: “It was great to get the win, especially because a few things went on at half time.

“After that, the gaffer brought us all in. I think a few players needed calming down. He told us to keep our heads and let our football do the talking – and second half we did.

“I think the referee got caught up in it a bit first half, when all the challenges were flying in, and he was a bit hasty with the sending off.

“It was a battling performance, but it doesn't matter as long as we win.

"The last time I scored twice in a game was in the Preston youth team so I enjoyed the winner – we all did.

“There was a lot of adrenaline and passion in the celebration. I think it was more relief because we thought maybe we'd done it 1-0, but we kept going to the end.”

After scoring the first brace of his professional career, Mayor is now focussing on Saturday's trip to Swindon, where last season he scored his first header as a pro. That clinched a 1-0 win in April and the Shakers midfielder is eager for another positive result.

He added: “The gaffer pulled us all together on the pitch afterwards and said 'it's a great win, well done'. We've had a draw and three wins now so we just want to carry on that momentum at Swindon.”
