BURY’s teenage fantastic four shone again as they held play-off chasing Bradford to a 1-1 draw at Valley Parade.

There were no fireworks in this New Year's Eve clash, but the Shakers’ youthful side dug deep to earn a vital point that ensures they go into 2017 outside of the relegation zone.

Callum Styles, aged 16, Jacob Bedeau, 17, George Miller, 18, and Scott Burgess, 19, kept their places in the side and continued to impress against the experienced fifth-placed Bantams.

In fact, it was Burgess who gave the Shakers the lead with a delightful lob late in the first half.

Nicky Law equalised after the break, but Bury survived a late onslaught to secure a confidence-boosting draw.

Head coach Chris Brass kept faith with the same side that drew 0-0 at Fleetwood on Boxing Day, but switched to a 4-2-3-1 formation that allowed Burgess more freedom, playing off forward Tom Pope.

Shakers goalkeeper Rob Lainton was called into action early, saving from Mark Marshall after the winger cut in from the left.

Centre-back Bedeau showed his class soon after, stopping pacy forward Jordy Hiwula from bursting through on goal.

But Bury’s youthful side proved more than a match for their experienced hosts as Burgess tried his luck with a volley from distance that landed inches wide.

James Hanson muscled himself some space in the Bury box but his header, which looked destined for the bottom corner, brought a world-class flying save from Lainton.

Although he did not know much about it, Bedeau cleared Hiwula’s close-range effort off the line in the 40th minute.

And it was following a counter attack from the resulting corner that Bury scored the opener.

Pope played Burgess through on goal and the 19-year-old coolly lofted the ball over the goalkeeper to net his second goal of the season.

The Shakers took a well-deserved lead into the break after out-working their hosts for the majority of the first period.

Brass’ side did not settle for their lead in the second half as they continued to get the ball down and play their way into the attacking third.

Burgess came close to doubling his and Bury’s tally when he volleyed Pope’s cross goalwards minutes after the break.

But Bradford drew level in the 53rd minute after Hanson was denied by Lainton and Law followed up to drill home the rebound.

Law came close to his second soon after, this time dragging a volley wide from the edge of the post.

Bury came under heavy pressure late on but they had the mental resolve and togetherness to pull through.

The result left the Shakers one point above the League One drop zone in 20th place.
