WE asked readers, when this picture first featured in Memory Lane on January 12, to name Sam Ellis's four summer signings ahead of the 1990/91 season and hazard a guess as to the transfer fees Bury paid to bring them to Gigg Lane.

Phil Rainey came agonisingly close – he was just £5,000 out on one fee – but David Monks got it spot on.

He said: "The four players are, from the left, Roger Stanislaus (£90,000) from Brentford, Ronnie Mauge (£40,000) from Fulham, Colin Greenall (£125,000) from Oxford United and John McGinlay (£175,000) from Shrewsbury Town.

"So McGinlay was the most expensive but went on to enjoy a love/hate relationship with the Bury fans.

"He only played 16 times for us, going on loan to Millwall before signing permanently for them after our major benefactor, Hugh Eaves, had to reduce his financial input.

"But of the nine goals McGinlay scored for Bury, three came against Bolton on March 19, 1991.

"Vice-chairman Canon Reg Smith said he should have received the freedom of Bury for his hat-trick.

"When he later signed for the local enemy he became the object of the fans' derision.

"His standing with the Shakers supporters was not helped when, playing for Bolton in a 1992/93 League Cup tie, McGinlay challenged our keeper Gary Kelly and he was injured, missing the remainder of the season."

Coincidentally, the other picture featured in Memory Lane on January 12 showed McGinlay tackling Stanislaus in that very cup tie.
