LEE Clark reckons incoming striker Tom Heardman is a dead ringer for ex-Newcastle United and England star Andy Carroll.

The 6ft 4in striker has trained with the squad this week ahead of tomorrow night’s friendly at home to Sunderland.

The Geordie spent time on loan at League Two Hartlepool last season but only made only two appearances.

Yet his lack of game time is not a concern for Clark, with Bury and Newcastle expected to confirm a one-year loan deal today.

“Tom is a young, energetic player,” Clark said. “He is six-foot-four and will be a different asset for us. We will be able to feed on his flick-ons and knock downs but he is not just a big guy, he is very athletic and reminds me of a young Andy Carroll.

“I’m not concerned (about his lack of professional appearances). These young lads need a chance just like our young lads do and we believe he can add something extra to our group. He has already hit the ground running this week.”

Bury also signed former Preston winger Chris Humphrey on a one-year deal, while midfielder Scott Burgess has been sent out on loan to Macclesfield.

Clark added: “We let Scott go out on loan to get more game time than he would have got here.

“This wasn’t one of those loans so that other clubs can have a look at him. Scott is very much still in our plans for the future and he is only around the corner, so we can keep regular tabs on him.

“Chris Humphrey adds something different to the squad. He has a lot of pace and is very direct. Simon Grayson was full of praise when I spoke to him.”

Clark is set to lock horns with Grayson tomorrow when the ex-Preston boss brings his new Sunderland side to Gigg Lane.

“This is the start for us now,” Clark said. “They have appointed a very good manager in Simon Grayson and it is exciting to welcome a huge club to Gigg Lane.”
