BURY kicked off their pre-season in front of 40,000 fans at Rangers on Friday night.

A 6-0 defeat for the Shakers will give manager Ryan Lowe much food for thought, but the memory of playing in front of such an enormous crowd is what will live long in the memory of the Bury fans who had travelled to Glasgow.

The Gigg Lane men were outplayed from start to finish in what was new Rangers manager Steven Gerrard's first game in charge.

Bury had new signings Tom Miller playing at right-back and goalkeeper Matt Hudson, on loan from Preston until January, having to work overtime.

Gerrard said: "The turnout was fantastic. Close to 40,000 here for a friendly and, with all due respect, it’s not one of the glamour friendlies. AC Milan or Real Madrid haven’t rolled in here, when you’d expect it to be full."

Scott Arfield scored twice while Jamie Murphy, Alfredo Morelos, Nikola Katic and Zak Rudden got one apiece against the League Two side.

It was the last game for Rangers before they host Macedonian side Shkupi in the first round of European qualifiers next week.

Gerrard added: "This was a friendly match against Bury; yes there was 40,000 here so there was a slight bit of pressure, especially for the new players because it's the first time they will be judged."
