Strikers can fire glory bid - Scott

SHAKERS skipper Paul Scott believes the team have enough firepower in their ranks to launch another assault on the promotion places this season.

Bury missed out on automatic promotion by just one goal in May, and manager Alan Knill has acted by bringing prolific strikers Ryan Lowe and Danny Carlton to the club.

The duo will compete with Andy Bishop and Andy Morrell for a starting place, and Scott believes it all bodes well for another crack at the top three.

“I am very impressed by the signings we have made so far,” said Scott.

“I know Ryan has scored against us a few times in the past and he is one you know you always have to keep an eye on because he will score goals if he gets a chance.

“He is tricky and has good technique, which means he will fit well into our team.

“We have some good attacking players with the strikers and Michael Jones and we know that if we keep it tight at the back we have a chance.

“We also showed last season that if we do concede, we can pull games around because we have goals in the team.

“It’s a great confidence boost to have players like that in your team.”

The Gigg Lane outfit head into pre-season as one of the favourites in League Two and Scott, who has been with the club since 2004, believes the added expectation will spur the team on.

“I think teams have underestimated us in the past and just thought that we are little old Bury who get beat quite a lot,” said Scott.

“That has changed now. Last season we did really well and made a few people sit up and take notice. We enjoyed being up near the top — there was a real buzz around the place.

“We have kept the nucleus of our squad together, and added to it, so we expect to do well again.

“Hopefully, like last year, we can have a good start to the season and build some momentum.”

The Wakefield-born 29-year-old was forced to sit out the closing stages of the season with a knee injury, but he believes he is back to full fitness and raring to go again.

“I was gutted to miss out at the end of last season,” said Scott. “The boys did magnificently well, but it was hard to watch from the stands.

“It was probably the lowest point of my career because I have never really had too many injuries.

“I returned to training at the end of last season and I am fully fit now — and refreshed. I can’t wait to get going again.”
