Shakers looking for points, not revenge

REVENGE will be the last thing on Bury’s mind when they take on their play-off conquerors Shrewsbury on Saturday.

It is only six months since the Shakers’ agonising penalty defeat to Paul Simpson’s men in the semi-finals, but Gigg Lane duo Stephen Dawson and Andy Morrell insist the team will be focused on three points and nothing more.

“I think that defeat has gone now — it’s in the past,” said Dawson. “They were good games and credit to them for digging deep and winning.

“We hold no grudges. We were disappointed with how we lost that game, but that is gone now and we have to move on because if we can get a result against Shrewsbury we can get into the top four.

“After such a bad start to the season, we are playing good football again, the fans are getting behind us and it’s looking good.”

Morrell echoed his team-mates thoughts and believes there is nothing to be gained by seeking out revenge.

“I don’t think we need extra motivation — it has gone,” said the experienced striker. “We probably should have won that game but it’s a new division this season.

“Last year we were right at the top and people were chasing us but this time it’s different because we’re doing the chasing now.”

Irish midfielder Dawson, who is revelling in the captaincy handed to him in the absence of club skipper Paul Scott, realises that the trip to the New Meadow will present a stern test of the Shakers’ promotion credentials.

Three points would see Alan Knill’s men overhaul the big-spending Shrews in the League Two table and Dawson believes his team-mates can extend their nine match unbeaten run.

“We have nothing to fear,” said Dawson. “Notts County are easily one of the better teams in this league and we held our own against them.

“We are doing well and we’ll train hard and go from there.

“We showed some good fighting spirit last weekend and it was pleasing that we started well. For the first 20-25 minutes we went after them and tore them to shreds.”

Dawson, who rifled in from 25 yards on Saturday, was delighted to notch his third of the season and he added: “It just opened up. I took a lucky strike and it ended up going in the back of the net.

“It wasn’t the best I have scored, but it was up there. I scored a better one than that a couple of years ago but the family was over for this one and it was for them — it was nice for them to see it.”
