Winner takes it all - Barry-Murphy

BRIAN Barry-Murphy says the Shakers will have to take a few risks if they want to achieve automatic promotion.

The Irish ace felt too many draws proved costly as Bury missed out on the top three by a single point last season.

Alan Knill’s men have ground out a number of crucial victories over the course of the campaign and Barry-Murphy hopes that is a sign of things to come at the business end of the season.

“I do think that there can be a stage of games towards the end of the season where a draw is seen as a good result but we have the extra ambition to push on and risk getting beaten to go for the win,” he said.

“To win games you have to do that and I don’t think we have drawn too many over the course of the season.

“We have had a good few weeks and, although we were disappointed to lose at Chesterfield, we have bounced back well.

“I think the performances have been generally good and I feel we are in reasonable shape and confidence is high.

“Our performances have improved, even in the last couple of weeks and, as long as we keep everybody fit, I think we can go on a run that would get us promoted.

“Traditionally, even when we have been struggling, we have ended the season well and that is something to draw on again.

“It would be nice if we could repeat that this season.”

Former Preston and Sheffield Wednesday ace Barry-Murphy believes the squad can be proud of their achievements considering the sheer number of injuries they suffered in the first half of the season.

The Gigg Lane outfit are no longer a surprise package but they have dealt admirably with all of the obstacles placed in front of them to come out at the other end with a fantastic chance of a place in the top three in May.

“Last year it was unexpected for us to be up there and we surprised everybody,” said the 31-year-old.

“I would imagine that any success this season would be a better achievement because of the injuries we have had.

“We take a lot of satisfaction from how well we are doing because sometimes it is harder to do well in the second season when everyone knows what you are about.

“We have done that quite comfortably and, as a group, we will keep pushing so that we get what we deserve from the season.”
