SHAKERS striker Ryan Lowe has admitted he was gutted to see former club Chester City closed down earlier this week.

The 126-year-old club, who were kicked out of the Football Conference on February 26, owed HM Revenue & Customs £26,125 in unpaid taxes.

They were wound up at a High Court hearing in London on Wednesday, and Lowe said: “I was gutted about Chester, it was sad to see.

“I think it was always going to happen once they had the points deducted and wages were not getting paid etc.“The Inland Revenue needed money from them and once it gets to that stage you can’t continue trading as a football club.

“It was a sad day but there are a group of fans hoping to get another club up and running and I hope they succeed because Chester is a nice place and they deserve a football club.

“If the fans back it and they manage to get some investment I’m sure they soon get back into the league.

“They have to start from the bottom, but they have a good fanbase and they are taking over the stadium so for a semi-pro football team to play at the Deva Stadium is going to be quality.

“I’m sure they will get a good team together and fly up the league.”
