An air of confusion

WIGAN Athletic manager Steve Bruce recently admitted he didn't know the offside rule or what kind of dangerous tackle constituted a sending off offence.

Then West Ham United boss Harry Redknapp said he didn't understand why his January signing Jermain Defoe wasn't allowed to play against his old club, Spurs.

Match of the Day pundit Alan Hansen quickly followed up by saying he also didn't understand the offside law and accused referees of not knowing them either.

Is it any wonder there's so much controversy in football when no-one knows the rules?

"Then West Ham United boss Harry Redknapp said he didn't understand why his January signing Jermain Defoe wasn't allowed to play against his old club, Spurs."

It's because he's on loan. This came out a few days after the transfer window closed. Because the Benjani deal looked like it might fall through, Portsmouth got nervous and signed Defoe on loan instead of buying him. They'll buy him proper in the summer and then he'll be able to play against Spurs.

Surely "good 'ol" Harry knows what's going on at his own club?
