TEENAGE Deane cyclist Matt Rotherham has stormed to victory in the Junior National Track Championships 1K time trail and the keirin in Manchester.
The 17-year-old Canon Slade School sixth form pupil also finished second in the sprint behind world junior champion John Paul, whom he beat in the keirin.
The youngster, who is part of the British Cycling Olympic Development Programme, is now preparing to compete against track cycling sprint icons Sir Chris Hoy and Bolton’s Jason Kenny in the senior national championships in Manchester next month.
“It’s my dream to compete in the Olympics, so to compete alongside Chris and Jason is amazing,”
said Matt.
He recently returned from the Junior European Track Championships in Anadai Portugal where he finished fourth in the sprint and fifth in the keirin before being selected for the World event in Moscow before finishing fifth in the keirin.
The youngster has been cycling for seven years, but it is only in the last four years that his talent as a competitor has been recognised.
Rotherham trains at the Manchester Velodrome four times a week as he bids to follow in the footsteps of local cycling star Kenny.
