GEORGE Ramm's coach Eddy Kavanagh believes the Sharples Wrestling Club youngster is just starting out on a successful career in the sport after his Commonwealth Games bow.

Kavanagh is a deputy team leader to England Wrestling and is well-placed than most to cast his eye over the countries talent.

Ramm may have went out at the quarter-final stage losing to Scotland's Viorel Etko 17-6 in the 61kg category but Kavanagh believes it is the start of a promising senior career.

He said: "George proved that he can perform at this level as he scored 22 points against more experienced calibre of competitors.

"The fact he picked up a win is a great achievement.

"I am sure he will have many more competitions and will be good for him in the future.

"He is the youngest member of the England team so I expect in the next few years he will go on to win things.

"The experience of getting a win in front of a packed crowd at the SEC will be good for his career."

Earlier in the day, the ex-Turton School pupil saw off the challenge of Aussie veteran Deon Swart 15-3 in the round of 16.

Kavanagh added he believed George should not be too disappointed in losing to Etko.

He said: "Viorel is the assistant team coach for Scotland and has been around the block for some time.

"He has fought at the highest level for years and is a top lad.

"George took an early lead by Etko came back but he managed to get six points off Etko.

"George has shown he is capable of competing at the top and if he can mature and develop then when he becomes an adult he will get strength and power.

"I am sure he is going to be part of the Great Britain set-up for years to come."

George Ramm was disappointed to go out of the competition at the quarter-final stage.

He said: "It was difficult – I knew it would be tough because I’ve wrestled him before and that one was a lot closer.

“I’m still happy from the first match I won and it still hasn’t sunk in yet – being just 17 and at these Games has been an amazing experience.

“My first match was good and I needed it as a bit of a boost for me but I knew this would be a tough one.”
