GEORGE Ramm is adamant he will benefit from his Commonwealth Games experience.

The 17-year-old Bolton wrestler reached the quarter-final in Glasgow yesterday before going out to eventual bronze medallist Viorel Etko from Scotland.

“He’s 20 years older than me and he’s been to a lot of Games whereas this is my first, so to score eight points I think I’ve proved a bit of a point,” said the Harwood teenager.

“It was difficult – I knew it would be tough because I’ve wrestled him before and that one was a lot closer.”

Sharples Wrestling Club member Ramm, who represented Team England at 61kg in Glasgow, turns 18 tomorrow, while home crowd favourite Etko is twice his age at 36 and ensured experience triumphed over youth to seal a place in the semis.

Ramm’s day began in style at the SECC with a first-round win over Australia’s Deon Swart.

“I’m still happy from the first match I won and it still hasn’t sunk in yet,” added Ramm. “Being just 17 and at these Games has been an amazing experience.

“My first match was good and I needed it as a bit of a boost for me but I knew this would be a tough one.”

Ramm has already racked up quite a bit of world-class wrestling experience, including silver at the 2013 Australian Youth Olympic Festival.

And with father Jason a former international wrestler and European silver medallist, he is vowing to come back stronger.

“All respect to my opponent – he was awesome and the Scottish crowd were great for both of us as well,” he added.

“Whatever happens I’m really happy and it was a really good experience to compete here.”
