DEANE A cemented a fifth-place finish in B Section of the Bolton Badminton League with a 10-8 victory over Forrest D in the last match of the season.
Forrest’s Catherine Jameson and Chris Latham put their team on the scoresheet first by winning the first two games of the night 21-15, 21-19, against Jean Smith and Rob Brocklehurst.
Deane’s second pair, Sam Robertson and Tony Waring quickly replied by taking the next two games 21-18, 21-15 against Louise Quayle and Ian Winrow.
Deane’s third couple, Theresa Gough and Kanti Mistry, also won their games, the first a fairly easy 21-11 and the second, a much closer game, 24-22 against Lindsey Tait and Mark Allan.
The first couples shared their games when Forrest’s Quayle and Winrow edged the first 22-20 and Smith and Brocklehurst took the second 21-19.
Forrest’s Jameson and Latham continued their good form when the second couples met, winning 21-16, 21-19 against Robertson and Waring.
Going into the level doubles the match stood at 5-5 and remained all square after the first pair of ladies’ games saw Forrest’s Tait and Quayle win the first 21-18 and Deane’s Gough and Smith reply with a 21-19 win in the second.
The second pair of ladies’ games was also shared, Deane’s Gough and Robertson taking the first 21-12 and Tait and Jameson the second 21-16.
Forrest fought back but Deane’s Mistry and Waring won the vital final game of the night, 21-16, to secure a win for their team against Allan and Latham.
In Section C, Metro A also won 10-8 against Moorside A.
Carole Watts and David Smith got visiting Metro got off to a good start by beating Judith Standlsh and Matt Barton 21-18, 21-19.
Sue Beamer and Andrew Taylor, playing second for Moorside, won the first 21-18 against Barbara Butterworth and Mike Horrocks who took the second 21-19.
Amanda Bracegirdle and Steve Gittins won both third couples' games against Metro’s Joanne Holden and Peter Holden 21-18, 21-16.
The first couples shared their games, Moorside’s Standish and Barton taking the first 21-19 and Butterworth and Horrocks edging the second 22-20.
Moorside’s Beamer and Taylor won both their games in the second couples’ encounter 21-19, 23-21 against Watts and Smith to establish a 6-4 lead for their side after the mixed games.
The first pair of ladies’ games was shared when Metro’s Holden and Butterworth won the first 21-13, and Bracegirdle and Standish reciprocated by taking the second 21-15.
The first pair of men’s games were shared when Moorside's Gittins and Barton won the first 21-19 and Holden and Horrocks eased to victory in the second 21-10.
Going into the second pair of ladies’ games Moorside were 8-6 in front, but Metro produced a storming finish, Holden and Watts winning their ladies’ games 21-11, 21-18, and Holden and Smith beating Gittins and Taylor 21-17, 21-19.
