The following day the resilient Staveleys were back in action at the Buttermere 10-mile Trail race.

Following the shoreline of Buttermere Lake, returning through woodland and the spectacular waterfall of Sourmilk Gill, Andy Staveley finished 15th in 1:18:19 to claim first male veteran over-50 place and Shirley Staveley was 83rd (second FV50) in 1:39:50.

At the Ron Hill Accrington 10k, Ady Merritt battled the wet, blustery conditions to finish 81st out of 487 in 43:31.

Finally, Paul and Brenda Sedgwick took part in a gruelling 55.5-mile overnight walk with more than 1,260m of ascent in aid of the Christie Hospital.

The veterans faced tough conditions with strong winds and torrential rain greeting them over the tops of Winter Hill and beyond with testing boggy terrain hampering efforts.

The pair began at 5pm and completed the run in 21:15:00.
