BOLTON boxer Jack Flatley won through to the North West region of the national elite Amateur Championships by taking the North West title.

The 19-year-old produced two impressive performances to win his semi-final on a unanimous points decision and then the final on a split decision.

He now faces the customary tough challenge from Liverpool fighters in the North West round, but his trainer at Halliwell Amateur Boxing Club, Alex Matvienko, believes the 19-year-old from Farnworth has the class to go all the way.

"He is looking awesome," said Matvienko. "We could have someone big on our hands in Jack, we could have an ABA champion at elite level which would be amazing.

"You don't often have easy fights as this level but Jack won his semi-final against Kyle Lomotey from Astley VIP quite comfortably.

"His opponent is a big punching southpaw with a great record but Jack boxed out of his skin, dominating every round and winning clearly by a unanimous decision.

"In the final he boxed George Parrish from Beartown. Jack won the fight quite easily but the judges gave it as a split decision.

"Jack again dominated and it was never a split decision in our opinion, he won well.

Matvienko's stable also has a fighter competing at professional level tomorrow night when Luke Blackledge takes on former elite ABA amateur champion Liam Cameron at King George's Hall, Blackburn, for the vacant super-middleweight Commonwealth title.

Matvienko says the 24-year-old, who is from outside Bolton but travels in to train at the Halliwell gym's profesional section, Elite, will move up to potential world title fights if he wins tomorrow.

He is currently ranked in the top 30 in world and holds the WBC international silver title.

Haliwell ABC are staging an amateur boxing show tonight at the Macron Stadium, featuring around 17 amateur fights to raise money for a charity.

Doors open at 7pm and boxing commences at 7.30pm.
