KAYLI English became Bolton United Harriers' first wheelchair athlete to compete in an official competition.

And the 13-year-old made it a memorable milestone when she won a medal at a major championships.

Competing against girls two years her senior in the under-16s age group, she won bronze in the 100m wheelchair race at the North West Regional Athletics Championships for Disabled and Deaf Athletes at SportCity in Manchester.

Her time of 34 seconds was easily good enough for her to qualify for the national championships at Warwick University in Coventry next month June, being comfortably inside the 36secs qualifying time.

She confirmed her outstanding form with another good performance to win the 100m in her age group in another competition in Stockport.

Wheelchair racing is a relatively new event being coached at Bolton United Harriers and coaching takes place on Wednesdays between 6pm and 7pm, and in two sessions on Thursdays, from 10am to noon and 5.30pm to 6.30pm. Meanwhile, the Harriers' youngsters came fourth in the seven-club Youth Development League Lower Northern West Three division for under-13s and under-15s athletes.

They finished the opening fixture at Bangor on 396.5 points, just behind Southport Waterloo (407), with Menai (459) winning ahead of Leigh (442.5).

The event, which also featured Colwyn, Deeside and Halton & Frodsham saw a fine performance by the sprint squad with golds for Matthew Flannigan, Kehinde Taiwo, Hakeem Ogunneye, Charlotte Plant, Taiwo Taiwo, Kel Wilcock-Malin and Lydia Hodgson.

Coach Allen Parkinson’s u15s girls 4x100m relay team produced an outstanding performance, Hodgson, Emily Wood, Plant and Taiwo destroying the opposition in 52.1 seconds.

The Bolton team, who could yet be elevated to second due to a points issue and the possibility that ineligible athletes were fielded by other clubs, also included Ciara Gettinby, Ellie Jo Ramsden, Anna Quinn, Adam Akik, Toby Coop, Madeline Erzan-Essien, Alice Tonge, Sadie Thompson, Jessica Johnson, Emma Loftus, Ben Thompson, Ella Arnold, Clemencia Longthorne, Kehinde Taiwo, Maya Erzan-Essien, Matthew Morrison, Ben Thompson, Callum McHale, Sadie Thompson and Emma Loftus, and the team managers were Paul Rossington and Mark Plant.
