THE Northern Athletics senior/under-20s outdoor championships saw each participating Blue Vest become Northern champion.

In the 3,000m steeplechase, Frazer Jardine won his first senior title by 11 seconds, setting off at pace with the intention of beating his personal best.

He crossed the line in 9:27.87, just 0.02 seconds short of it.

Up-and-coming 17-year-old Declan Toomey competed in the same event, and finished in 10:32.36 – a 22-second personal best to add to the NoEAA title.

In the field, high jumper Chris Mann retained his title at under U23 level, clearing 2.03m.

The Greater Manchester County Schools’ Championships at Stretford saw many good results from Bolton’s stable of track and field juniors.

The performance of the day went to Hannah Kelly, who attained the u15 200m standard to be selected for the English Schools Championships.

Her 26.18s in the final was 0.1secs shy of her heat time, but still collected gold for the title.

Club-mate Lydia Hodgson collected silver with a personal best of 26.87secs despite being a year younger.

Callum Elliot won his u17 200m heat with 23.05s – the quickest time of the day, but a hip injury forced him to miss the final.

The Mason Trophy next weekend provides a second chance for qualification for the nationals.

The Bolton’s Hawks and Falcons won more than 25 medals at Bury AC’s second mini league meeting.

The highlight was u11 duo Julia Winogrodzka and Isabella Merritt going neck and neck over sprint and distance.

First, the 80m saw them eventually separated by just 0.1secs with Julia timed at 11.6secs, and then there was just a one-second difference in the 600m with Julia again beating her club-mate in 1:53.0.

Julia made it three golds with 3.80m in the long jump. Other winners included Harvey Kenny’s 9.91m in the u9s javelin, and long jumpers Isobel Hall’s 2.95m (u9s) and Jack Vickers’s 3.67m (u11s).

For the senior endurance squad, Sunday’s Edgworth 5k/10k race saw Chris Topping finish the lap of the Wayoh Reservoir which served as the 5k race in fourth place (of 96 finishers) in 19:40.

The 10k race, which included a loop of the adjoining Entwistle Reservoir, saw an off-colour Ian Gregory (44:22) edging Danny Shaw (44:48) for 12th position of the 183 field.

Elsewhere, the Rock N Roll Liverpool Marathon featured Lesley Heyes, clocking a superb 3:46:26 for 11th F45 (682nd overall) and Cecilia Woods recording 4:00:22, but with a great age-group position of seventh F55.
