This week, Sue Hayes talks about how you can get ready for tennis.

Q. I love watching tennis at Wimbledon on TV and would really like to play but how do I start?

Do get inspired by tennis and don’t worry if you have never played before. There are a number of ways you can easily get involved in this sport locally.

It you visit your local leisure centre, park, club or tennis centre you will find a range of tennis classes to suit your needs. These include taking part in a cardio tennis session; this is basically fast-moving aerobic activity with music and a racket in your hand. No need for skill, just effort!

You can also try “touch tennis”. This game is normally played indoors on a smaller court, and a sponge ball is used alongside a smaller racket so it’s an easier form of the game. This game adopts all the same skills as traditional tennis but with much greater chance of success. It’s also a fast game so don’t assume this is just for kids.

You can also join beginner tennis classes and enjoy some tuition to get you started in the game. All of this can be undertaken indoors. Bolton has a number of venues offering indoor tennis so don’t let the usual poor Summer weather put you off.

There are several good local tennis clubs, too, where you will find a welcoming atmosphere and a chance to socialise as well as play tennis. Clubs will offer coaching for all ages and abilities and, as you progress, you will even get a chance to play club matches.

And finally, you can also check out the parks with your family or friends. Tennis sessions have commenced at Moss Bank Park, and they’re free. At Moss Bank all equipment is provided and likewise at coached sessions at leisure and tennis centres.

However, if you would like to purchase your own racket and balls as a beginner you should look to spend around £20 on a racket. Rackets come in various sizes catering for juniors to adults. Check with your shop to ensure the best size for you.

Tennis is a good sport for all ages, it’s also good for your fitness, co-ordination and mobility.
