DEMI Scott won her first national title at the English Schools’ Athletics Association Championships.

One of four Bolton United Harriers competing for Greater Manchester at Gateshead, she ran the anchor leg for the senior girls' 100m relay team.

She brought home the baton home in second place but the team were promoted to the gold medal position when Kent were disqualified due to an illegal baton handover.

The four Bolton girls, who are all coached by Les Hall, were part of a select 60-strong Greater Manchester team at the 85th annual championships.

Scott, who has trained hard at Bolton for 10 years and was competing at the event for the last time before she transfers to the British University championships next year, finished fifth in her senior girls’ 100m heat in 12.95secs in blustery conditions which put paid to a fast time.

Anna Chadbond was seventh in her heat, and Georgia Lever was 13th in the long jump with a leap of 5.14m.

Hannah Kelly, ranked 14th in the UK, finished an outstanding sixth in the final of the 200m after the 14-year-old smashed her personal best in the heat with 25.49secs.

The club's growing band of triathlon debutants was led by coach Nick Howarth at the NHS/Bolton Council Fun Triathlon.

Howarth finished the 400m swim, 21km bike ride and 5km run in 1:21:00 for 18th overall.

With splits of 9:44 (69), 49:51 (16) and 21:25 (13), his running speciality came to the fore in the end.

Donna Cooper was next home in 29th with splits of 10:03 (79), 52:58 (26) and 23:59 (37) for 1:27:00.

Adrienne Fisher (55th) saw a good run rewarded with 1:36:00 – her splits were 9:54 (76) 1:00:51 (62) 25:15 (47).

Gail Harrison had a strong swim of 9:45 (73), with 1:15:14 (99) and 29:01 (82), her 1:54:00 was still good for 95th of 117 individual competitors.

In the Darwen Tower Triathlon, Andrew Doyle clocked a cumulative 1:41:09.8 to win individual bronze in a field of 88.

He had splits of 11:52.7 for the 600m swim, 50:13.8 for the 23km bike ride and 36:30.5 for the 8km run – the fastest run of the day.

Bolton’s Karl Darcy clocked 36:04 to take silver in the Bull Hill fell race from Hawkshaw’s Waggon & Horses pub.

He was just three seconds behind Rossendale’s Ash Holt.

The race, a counter towards the Blue Vests’ Steve Kenyon Endurance Challenge, also saw Phil Marsden’s 37:36 good enough for sixth of the 231 field.

Tommy Harrison continued his eye-catching improvement after just six months with the club by finishing 14th in 39:39, whilst Andy Parker (41:30) just beat Chris Povey (41:33).

M40 vet Christian Pickford timed in at 45:57 (74) as junior coach Pete Walker maintained a challenge in the club competition with 48:34 (103).

Pickford also clocked 42:12 (21st) in Friday’s Summer Cross Country, which was followed with 34:11 (13th) in Saturday’s Radcliffe 5 Mile for a cumulative 2:02:20.

That placed him 16th of the 54 athletes who completed each race of the Challenge. Ken Fowler’s 35:20 netted 22nd overall and first M60 in the 5 Mile.

Matt Pemrick ran a personal best of 21:30 for 77th place in the Todmorden 5k followed by another personal best of 44:48 in the Leeds 10k – 71 seconds quicker than his previous best.

In the We Love Manchester 10k, Bolton’s junior starlet Amy Howatson was 12th overall in 41:18 (118).
