A SQUAD of 10 Bolton sailors impressed at the Paignton Supernova National Championships:

There was a record-breaking fleet of 67 Supernovas racing side by side for a 10-race series, held over three days.

The conditions were, at times, tricky with big wind shifts compromised possible victories for some and ruined races for others.

Five of the intrepid Bolton sailors finished in the top 12.

Tony Critchley was sixth overall but among the highlights was winning the fifth race of the series and also claiming two second places.

Critchley was very fast throughout the series, leading a number of races before losing out due to the conditions. Tony also came second in the Masters (age over 50)

Meanwhile, Ian Wilson was eighth and he will have been impressed with his performances as he was 22nd last year and became a Nationals winner during race four of the event.

Alex Collins finished ninth but it was a disappointing result for the youngster.

Having won four opens this year and coming third at last years nationals, Collins was upbeat about his chances.

But could not pull together results and managed ninth overall.

Collins retained his Youth Championship title.

Andrew Flitcroft was 10th and he managed an impressively consistent series and was able to use his experience, speed and tactical knowledge to his advantage.

Mike Critchley was 12th and a fourth in race four was the highlight of Mike's event.

Meanwhile, among the other five successes included: Peter Mackin (2nd in Youth category), Peter May, Jeffery Robinson, Frank McMullen and Geoff Ditchfield, a couple of whom had never sailed on the sea before, did their club very proud.
