BUH&AC’s Under-13s and U15s juniors clinched promotion with victory in their final Youth Development League Lower fixture in Leigh.

They beat the hosts' 544.5 points by almost 100 (643) while fellow promotion rivals Southport claimed 504.5.

Bolton achieved a total of 23 league points and promotion to West Two at the expense of Southport (21) who were level on points at the start of the day.

Bolton, managed by Mark Plant and Paul Rossington, finished second overall to Leigh who finished with 26 points.

The seniors’ track and field team are runaway leaders in Northern 2WC Division after finishing second to hosts Blackpool in the penultimate fixture.

Bolton gained 400 points with Blackpool winning with 427.5 and the Leverhulme Park team are way out in front with 15 points, with four chasing teams tied on 10.

The Blue Vests will be assured of a play-off place for promotion as champions if they can gain another two points from the final fixture in which they will have home advantage when it is staged at Leverhulme Park on August 8.

Three of the club's endurance squad completed the Ironman UK competition in Bolton. Cherry Collison (13:51:02) was first home as 17th F40, having maintained a high cadence during the bike section following a strong swim that saw her emerge from the water in seventh position.

Her splits of 1:12:12 (swim), 7:34:16 (bike) and 4:46:17 (run) were hugely impressive.

Marcus Chester (14:12:32) had a powerful ride and ran at a steady pace over Chorley New Road’s tarmac (1:25:21, 7:30:19, 4:54:12) while Stewart Brierley (16:13:37) had some trouble as run section entered its final hour of competition before cut-off, but a sprint to the line brought him home in just under six hours (1:38:18, 8:21:02, 5:58:51).

Tony Valentine won the third Jubilee Five-Mile race in the series from Rivington village in 27:23.

In fourth position in the 106 field, Tommy Harrison improved by 22 seconds from a month ago (27:38), while Daryl Bentley’s 32:35 (22) was 31 seconds quicker.

John Grimshaw’s 41:17 (86) completed the race-winning team with 82 points – just four in front of Burnden Road Runners’ tally.

Andrew Doyle’s 56:44 was 40th in the Ingleton Gala Mountain Race and Chris Topping scored another personal best in the Windmill HM at Lytham (1:35:56).
