BOLTON Golf Club crowned a new club champion last week when Tim Cooper broke his duck and claimed his first championship title after overhauling his league team-mate, Mark Millhouse, with a decisive 4&3 victory.

“I am delighted and over whelmed” said Cooper.

“I know I played well and kept my head down. I got off to a good start and when Mark faltered a little it was up to me to keep my game together.”

Cooper joined the Bolton club in 2008 following a move from Edinburgh where he played at the renowned Edinburgh course – Dalmahoy – for over 10 years; but without a major title.

Indeed, his main sporting activity had been football and he was 27 before he took up golf.

Millhouse was gracious in defeat, admitting “I just could not get my game going and made a few too many mistakes. But Tim played well and was a worthy winner.”

But it was Millhouse who made the first move when he won the fourth to go

1-up but was back to all square by the 6th when he dropped a shot and immediately lost the 7th after a three putt.

By now Cooper was playing confidently and when Millhouse hit a wayward drive off the ninth tee and followed it with a disastrous second shot, he eventually had to concede the hole and Cooper went 2-up.

Following two pars it was Cooper who sank another birdie on the 12th to go 3-up and when Millhouse found the green-side bunker on the 13th he had to concede to Coopers four and the end appeared nigh with a 4-up deficit.

Whilst Cooper missed the green and lost the 14th , holes began to run out and the match closed on the 15th with a 4&3 win for the new champion.
