TWO Tyldesley Water Polo stars have been starring for Great Britain in the World Junior Championships in Volos, Greece.

Lauren Tasker has been skippering the under-20s side throughout the tournament while Honor Grimes kept up an impressive record of scoring in every game.

Speaking ahead of the tournament Tasker, aged 19, said: “I’m really looking forward to getting out to Greece.

"The training has been intense and the whole experience has been fantastic.

"We’ve been working for two hours in the morning and two hours at night.

"It’s a privilege to captain this team and we’ve all been working so hard to make sure we’re ready for this tournament.”

Meanwhile Grimes added: "We’re expecting big, passionate crowds in Greece and we can’t wait to start the tournament.

"The training was very intense and we’ve all enjoyed it as a team.

"I’ve spent a year in Spain preparing and won gold at the Commonwealths, but my goal is to push on and represent Great Britain at the Olympics.”

The duo were at the heart of the team's success last week.

Great Britain did not get off the best start by taking on Greece but they were outclassed by the hosts losing 27-4 – one of the highlights being Grimes scoring all of her teams goals.

Then they took on Japan in the second game who were an unknown quantity heading into the tournament for GB.

Tasker said: "We haven’t played them before and know little about them.

"Japan is our second game, so the only way we will learn more about them is when we watch them play Russia in their opening match, but we’re just going to go in

there and look to win."

But GB fell to a 22-8 defeat despite Tasker opening her account in the tournament while Grimes took her tally to six in the competition.

Despite the loss GB were able to stay in the hunt for a top 14 place but a 22-6 loss to Russia ensured they finished fourth in their pool and a 13th-16th classification tie with South Africa.

Grimes had scored bagged a hat-trick in the defeat to Russia.

Tasker led by example against South Africa with five goals as they triumphed in all four quarters to win 10-4.

The curtain came down on the tournament with a 22-7 defeat to European giants the Netherlands.

The Brits matched their opponents in the first half before fading in the third and fourth quarters.

City of Manchester’s Honor Grimes – playing for La Latina in Spain this season – continued her record of scoring in every game of the Championships with a goal in the first quarter but they trailed 3-1.

But there was nothing to choose between the two teams in the second quarter with captain Lauren Tasker (City of Liverpool) grabbing two and Grimes adding her 12th goal of the tournament to keep the Brits in touch at 6-4 down at the interval.

While Tasker completed her hat-trick early in the third quarter but it could not stop the team suffering a defeat.
