BURNDEN’S Steve Nolan and Lesley Fisher kicked off the cross country season with impressive wins.

Nolan was first V55 in the Red Rose Cross Country League opener at Hyndburn with a time of 43mins 27secs over the 10K route while Fisher picked up the L55 prize, covering the 5K course in 23:59.

Glen Kenyon was the first member home in the men’s race, finishing 42nd overall in a great time of 42:32 while Keith Thomas took third place in the V55 class and was third Burndener home in 43:59. Don Nichol was third V60 in 55:48.

Other men’s results: Rob Short (45:39), Paul Duke (46:18), Marcus Taylor (46:18), Lee White (48:06), Christophe Menand (51:00).

Kirsty White led the Burnden women home in 23:38, while Anne Ferguson was third L55 and third Burnden member to finish, posting a time of 26:18.

The magnificent scenery of the Lake District was the setting for the last in the 2015 series of the Lakeland Trails, testing competitors over some rugged, but rewarding, terrain at Helvellyn on Saturday and Ullswater on Sunday.

Andy and Shirley Staveley took part in both main 14K trail races, although the Ullswater race was reduced to 9.5K due to heavy rain and high winds making parts of the full course too dangerous. Andy finished 43rd at Helvellyn in 1hr 10mins 31secs and followed that up with 45th place and a time of 47:15 at Ullswater.

Shirley completed the Helvellyn course in 1:25:54 and posted 54:56 at Ullswater.

Matt and Carolyn Barker joined them at the start line in Ullswater to battle through the mud. Matt finished in 50:27 with Carolyn home in a time of 57:49.

Alec Cottrill and Peter Whiteside took on the Helvellyn 14K Trail Challenge with Cottrill finishing in 1:38:34 and Whiteside in 1:53:57.

The traditional Remembrance Day Windmill 10K at Lytham attracted a good turnout of members, with Jeff Pendlebury leading the club contingent home in 54:01.

The race is usually run in blustery conditions but this year was particularly cool and windy. It didn’t affect its popularity, however, with a massive 772 finishers.

Jackie Oakes was Burnden’s first female finisher in 55:12, just 12 seconds ahead of Judy Povey. Joanne Darby was the only other member to break the hour mark with her time of 59:57, although Jackie Cairns came agonisingly close, finishing in 1:00:24.

Other results: Rita Ledwards (1:03:45), Christine Pendlebury (1:07:11), Anne Larkin (1:14:18), Mandy Ogden (1:15:23).
