SHARPLES Wrestling Club are toasting the efforts of four of their young stars after impressive results at the Derbyshire Open in Worksworth.

Malachy O'Rourke and Kelsey Barnes came out on top with gold medals while Saffron Clegg and Ellis Crossley were runners-up in their categories by bringing home silver medals.

Head coach Eddy Kavanagh said: "This was the last competition of the year and we thought it was a good chance to see how they are going and progressing.

"The Derbyshire Open is a good competition and we were happy with the results.

"Malachy produced an outstanding performance winning all four of his matches and did not concede a point.

"The interesting thing about him was that he gave up 9lbs to many of his opponents yet still won.

"So his result was even better.

"Kelsey won silver representing GB in Latvia and then retained her British Championship title in October so she continued her good form by winning this event and she is wrestling well.

"Saffron is making a lot of progress and for her to get a silver medal is positive.

"While Ellis has just won the British title and at this competition he ended up with three wins out of four to get to the final.

"He has been at the club for a couple of years but we are delighted with his performance."

Meanwhile, there has also been some more good news for the Deansgate-based club.

Brandon Astley from Rumworth School who takes part in sessions as part of Sharples Wrestling Club's satellite club programme recently came runner up in the Greater Manchester Satellite club awards in the participation category.

Kavanagh added: "The club and Rumworth school are really proud of Brandon's achievements.

"It is fantastic for him to get this recognition and he has started to come down to our sessions at the club."
