FOUR boys from Rivington and Blackrod school were part of a Greater Manchester side to be crowned National County Handball Under-16s champions.

Harry Phillips, Jack Berry, Billy Moss and Charlie Fletcher, who are in their final year at the school, played for Greater Manchester in the county tournament in Stoke Mandeville in Buckinghamshire.

Manchester won the tournament after coming out top of the five teams in the competition.

They won it in exciting style with victory in the final against a Middlesex side who had previously topped the round-robin pool which also featured Greater Manchester.

At full time the match was 8-8 after a nervy performance from both sides and Manchester came out on top 11-10 after extra time.

The victory was revenge for the Rivington and Blackrod School lads and their team-mates who were beaten by Middlesex in the opening stage of the tournament.

Comfortable wins against Essex, Somerset and Staffordshire, saw Greater Manchester secure a second-place finish and set up a semi-final against Essex which they won 11-10.
