TYSON Fury’s heavyweight world title defence against Wladimir Klitschko will not take place at Wanderers’ Macron Stadium.

An ambitious bid was made to host the heavyweight super fight in July, with representatives from both camps visiting the venue last week for talks.

It is understood, however, promoters for the fight wanted financial guarantees that could not be met by the club, forcing them to seek another venue.

Sources told The Bolton News a seven-figure sum was demanded as insurance against any further financial problems at Wanderers next season.

It is now expected Manchester Arena – which was originally planned to stage the rematch in June – will host the much-anticipated second clash between Fury, who trained at the Macron ahead of the first clash, and Klitschko.

Wanderers are looking to ramp up the number of non-football events held at the stadium and in the Whites Hotel in an effort to improve turnover at the club and make better use of the facilities.

Boxing is one of the sports which is being seriously examined and prior to the takeover it had been reported Bolton’s Amir Khan had agreed a deal to stage some future fights at the stadium.
