JOHN McGinlay and Tony Kelly will be handing over the Hospital Cup on Monday night as Atherton Collieries take on Prestwich Heys at the Macron.

Four-time winners Colls go in as favourites after a successful season in the North West Counties Premier Division.

Michael Clegg’s side lifted the trophy last season for the second time in four years and though successive promotions have eluded them this season, their record of just five defeats in 34 league games is quite some achievement for the upwardly-mobile club.

Cup competitions have been kind to Colls in the last few years but they have contributed to a hectic May schedule which sees them play four games in six days.

They lost 2-0 at Ashton Athletic on Thursday night and face Barnoldswick Town this afternoon before the Hospital Cup on Monday evening. Just 24 hours later, Clegg takes his side to Fleetwood Town for the Men United Cup where they take on Colne.

Colls had a relatively simple 7-2 win against Turton FC in last season’s final but could find the fixture load levels the playing field against a Heys side no stranger to success themselves.

The Prestwich men have already lifted the Manchester League title with a modern-day record points haul and have lost just three times in league competition all season.

The last time the two sides met in a major showpiece, Heys lifted the Goldline Trophy in 2003 with a resounding 3-0 victory.

They follow up the Hospital Cup final with a trip to Hyde United on Thursday to take on Manchester Gregorians in the Gilgryst Cup final.

The game kicks-off at 7.30pm at the Macron Stadium on Monday evening. Admission is by payment at the turnstiles of £4 adults and £1 for concessions.
