CANON Slade's intermediate and junior athletics teams will compete in the English Track and Field Cup final on Saturday in Bedford.

The girls’ athletics teams at Canon Slade qualified at the North West regional round at Robin Park.

The junior girls qualified in first place with 352 points. Their closest rivals were The King’s School, Chester who gained 343 points with Altrincham Grammar School for Girls with 338 points.

Penny Townsend, Abigail Adeniji and Ciara Gettinby all scored 40 points or more in their two events.

In the intermediate girls, Canon Slade were first place overall with 388 points, 23 ahead of West Kirby Grammar, Wirral, and 27 points ahead of third-placed Kirkham Grammar School, Preston.

Leading athletes for Canon Slade were Taiwo Taiwo, Maya Erzan-Essien and Katie Howarth who all scored more than 40 points in their two events.

The teams are being sponsored by Bidvest Foodservice who have donated tracksuits and kit.

The boys' teams competed well and the junior boys, in particular, were unlucky to be pipped by just one point by St Anselm’s College, Birkenhead, who won the group with 379 points to Canon Slade’s 378.

In the intermediate boys, Canon Slade gained 322 points which gave them third place.
