TOM Lancashire is hoping to get a last chance to make it to his second Olympic Games.

He was denied an opportunity to claim the top-two spot needed for a place in the Great Britain squad when he fell after being clipped by eventual winner Charlie Grice on the final lap at the trials in Birmingham on Sunday.

The Bolton middle-distance star was leading at the time and looking good.

Lancashire, aged 30, believes he was unfairly impeded and hopes the selectors will consider him for the third spot in the Olympic team if he can get the qualifying time before the deadline on July 11.

“I’m not making a complaint, but I was unfairly impeded,” said the Bromley Cross man, who competed in the same event at the 2008 Beijing Games.

“I was going really well and feeling the best I’ve felt in a long time when it happened.

“If that had been a heat and the same thing had happened I would probably be given a place in the next round.

“I’m hoping they’ll look at the circumstances and say I’ll still be considered for the third spot in the team if I get the qualifying time.

“The frustrating thing about it is that it was the best race I’ve run for a long time.

“I saw Charlie coming and responded well and managed to box him in. He was close and clipped me.

“I’m not saying I would have won the race, all I’m hoping is that they take into account the circumstances and give me a chance of the third spot.”
