OVERCAST but dry conditions prevailed for Saturday’s finals of the Bolton Tennis Tournament, much better than forecasts earlier in the week had threatened.

The busiest player on the day was Jonny Shacklady, who was in the final of each of each of the three open events.

Disadvantaged by playing through a hip injury, Shacklady could not match Chris Nott in the singles final, going down 6-0 6-4.

He faced Nott again in the men's doubles final, partnering dad Phil while Nott was teamed with Charlie Foley.

This was a much closer affair but Nott and Foley shaded a good match 6-4 3-6 6-3.

However, Shacklady was a winner in the mixed doubles final. Playing with Rebecca Baldwin he faced Foley, who was partnered by Laurie Clark. Shacklady and Baldwin won in two close sets 6-4 6-4.

The ladies' singles final was also a quick affair asAmy Hadjinicolaou faced four-time champion Rachel Branagan and ran away with the match, winning 6-0 6-0 with an impressive display of hitting.

The ladies' doubles was also a short match. The experienced pairing of Hayley Warrington and Theresa McCarren could not find the form that saw them beat the Hadjinicolaou sisters in Friday’s semi-final and were overpowered 6-3 6-1 by another sister team, Laurie and Holly Clark.

The handicap event finals were generally close affairs. The exceptions were in the men's handicap singles competition and the senior veterans' mixed doubles. Twice previously a winner of this event, Ewan Smith gave Keith Robinson few opportunities and won 6-2 6-1. Diane Hardman and partner Pam Leach beat Kathleen Hadjinicolaou and Anne Vosper in a closely-fought ladies' doubles final by a score of 6-4 4-6 6-4.

With only a short break Hardman and her husband Bruce took on Dave Bedford and Kath Taylor in the senior mixed doubles final. The ladies' exertions had clearly taken their toll and Bedford and Taylor were comfortable 6-0 6-3 winners.
