CMB's all-conquering football teams faced an almost impossible mission when they kicked off the new season - to match the near perfection of their 2015-16 campaign.

The Chew Moor based club enjoyed almost unprecedented success last season, with all senior men's and ladies football team earning promotion.

Even the sports club's ladies rounders team joined in on the act.

The men's first team won the West Lancashire League Division Two title by 10 points, while the reserves finished runners-up in the Division Two Reserve League, making the step up to Division One.

Not to be out-done, the ladies' senior side rounded off the hat-trick by finishing second in Division One of the North West Women's League, earning promotion to the Premier.

And just to round off CMB's annus mirabilis, their ladies' rounders team stormed to the title in Section B of the BSF Rounders League.

Each team faces the same challenge this season, to adapt to the step up in competition.

But while club spokesman Dave Grundy accepts it is unlikely lightning will strike twice at CMB, he feels the whole club should be proud of their achievement.

"CMB has a strong tradition of producing strong and successful sporting teams but season 2015-16 will go down in the our history as a truly remarkable achievement and one of which all of the clubs representatives should be immensely proud," he said.

"The club regularly compete against much bigger and better funded clubs and teams, particularly in the football arena, and the club should rightly be proud of the efforts of everyone who has represented the club with such distinction this season."

If the men's first team feels any pressure to repeat their success, then they are not showing it.

After losing their opening match of the Division One season, Phil Roberts' side went on to win their next three.

"The lads showed remarkable consistency throughout the campaign," said Roberts, whose side only last two league matches all season.

"We had the best attack, Matty Carr finishing as the league’s top scorer with 22 goals, and also the best defence in the league, so we thoroughly deserved the title.

"The main objective at the start of the season was promotion and despite the numerous distractions of long periods without any games due to the awful weather, and a number of cup competitions, the team stuck to the their original goal and achieved their primary objective in some style."

While the reserves and ladies sides were just pipped to their respective titles, they too boasted the top goalscorers in their leagues, with Danny Tyrer netting 20 times for the reserves and Melissa Darby bagging 17 goals for the ladies.

Darby will be looking to fire the ladies' team to their fourth promotion in five seasons, after quickly rising from Lancashire County League Two to the North West Premier, which is the same level as playing in the Vanarama National League in men's football.

Manager Dave Grundy: "The season before last we actually missed out on promotion in our final game, so the girls have done tremendously well to bounce back from that disappointment.

"They have been on a remarkable run over the last few years and we don’t want to stop here."

If you would like to join in their success, CMB's men's teams play on Saturday afternoons on the sports ground in Tempest Road, while the ladies play on Sunday afternoons and the rounders team on Wednesday evenings during the season.
